Wine Tasting Etiquette: A Beginner's Guide

Don't stress about wine tasting etiquette. I've seen every level of wine knowledge on my tours, and the most important thing is to have fun. That said, here are some tips that'll make you feel more confident.

The Basics

**Hold the glass by the stem.** It keeps your hand from warming the wine and keeps the bowl clean for swirling.

**Swirl, sniff, sip.** Give the wine a gentle swirl to release aromas, take a good sniff, then taste. You'll pick up more flavors this way.

**It's okay to spit.** Seriously. At professional tastings, everyone spits. If you're visiting 3-4 wineries, pacing yourself is smart.

What NOT to Worry About

  • You don't need to identify specific flavors
  • You don't need to know grape varietals
  • You don't need to buy wine at every stop
  • You don't need to finish every pour

  • What to Actually Do

  • **Ask questions.** Tasting room staff love sharing their knowledge
  • **Take notes.** Even just "liked this one" helps when you're deciding what to buy
  • **Try things outside your comfort zone.** You might discover a new favorite
  • **Drink water between tastings.** Stay hydrated

  • The One Rule That Matters

Enjoy yourself. Wine is meant to be fun. If someone makes you feel bad about your wine knowledge, that's their problem, not yours.

On my tours, I make sure everyone feels comfortable regardless of experience level. That's the whole point.
